The author examines Austen's wry attitude in her juvenilia towards suicide, adultery, murder, theft, elopement, gambling and illegitamacy, and looks at how this changed in her mature writing. The book gives both anecdotal and general information about the nature of crime and punishment in the Regency period in which Austen lived, a fascinating read for anyone interested in social history.
